Sports injuries can happen during practice, play or tournament. About 30,000 hospitalizations are reported each year and majority of patients are high school students. Poor warm-up, inappropriate gear & equipment, and wrong postures are some of the common causes of such accidents.

Here are the most common sports injuries:

    1. Achilles tendinitis – This type of sports injury is common to athletes that participate in running or jumping activities. When the tendon behind the ankles is used excessively or when it is constantly used for high impact training, painful swelling can occur. If medical attention is not given, the condition can get worse until the athlete can no longer perform at the peak of his abilities.
    2. Sciatica – Although this type of injury is more common to people with sedentary lifestyle, athletes involved in cycling, gymnastics, tennis, golf and baseball can also suffer from extreme back pain. Chronic low back pain is caused by muscle spasms, misaligned spine or bulging discs. It must be brought to a specialist ASAP to address the cause; otherwise, the patient can suffer from possible paralysis.
    3. Tennis elbow – According to reports, about 10% of sports injuries are related to injured elbows. The reason behind this is probably because athletes use this body part primarily for support and exerting force. Repetitive backhand stroke and too much training, particularly for tennis players, can cause degeneration of the tendon in the elbow. This becomes painful over time and without proper treatment, it can lead to more serious complications.
    4. Pulled muscle – This type of injury is often associated to lack of stretching, improper warm-up, or inflexibility. Pulled muscles, specifically hamstrings, cause pain and discomfort. Bruising is another effect of pulled hamstrings. We advise our patients to perform gentle stretching before doing sports activities to keep the muscle flexible.
    5. Shoulder injury – Dislocated, sprained or strained shoulders account to more than 20% of sports injuries. It is common to swimmers, tennis players, golfers, basketball players, weightlifters and baseball athletes. Overuse or loose rotator cuff is the general cause of this injury. It makes the athlete lose his best performance because of the pain, weakness and stiffness that can be felt in the shoulders.
