Myofascial pain syndrome is a painful condition characterized by spasms, muscular tenderness and aching muscular points or ligaments. Patients who have this condition experience severe pain that doesn’t seem to go away permanently. Pain relievers may provide temporary comfort but the pain will persist after a day or two and sometimes it’s even worse.

    Causes of Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Trauma – It can develop after getting involved in any type of injury that may cause damage to the muscular system. It forces the muscle to stretch itself that can lead to pinched nerves.

Lifting heavy objects – It can develop after lifting anything that is too heavy for the body’s limitation. Incorrect body position when lifting is another cause.

Sudden use of unconditioned muscles – It can develop when you haven’t workout in awhile and suddenly you engaged in an intense exercise routine. Immobilization of body parts can also trigger myofascial pain syndrome.

Nutritional Deficiency – Poor nutrition can weaken the immune system and it can lead to a wide variety of illnesses including myofascial pain syndrome.

Common Symptoms of Myofascial Pain Syndrome

    • Deep muscular pains
    • Muscular pains that persist and that worsens in time
    • Muscular tenderness
    • Limited muscular movements due to pain

*Symptoms can be confusing since other conditions may have strikingly similar signs. It’s best to visit your chiropractor as early as possible to detect the root cause of pain and other underlying health problems.

We recommend you immediately see a chiropractor once you notice the following symptoms:

    • When pain killers don’t provide adequate relief
    • When you can’t sleep at night because of severe pain
    • When you are unable to perform your daily routines because of pain or discomfort
    • When taking a rest doesn’t help
    • When pain comes back after taking pain killers

*Take note that it’s ideal to set an appointment with your chiropractic doctor when the pain is still at its mild state instead of when you can no longer stand the pain. Don’t wait for the condition to get worse before you take action.

    Myofascial Pain Treatment Options

Massage Therapy – For mild cases of myofascial pain syndrome, simple massage therapies can alleviate the symptoms and help the patient to fully recover from pain.

Exercise Rehabilitation – Patients are advised to undergo an exercise rehab program to speed up the recovery process and increase the body’s endurance.

Ultrasound – Before any treatment plan starts, the chiropractor may request for an ultrasound of the affected body areas to fully examine the extent of the muscular damage. This allows doctors to create a treatment plan tailored to the patient’s needs.

Electric Muscle Stimulation – This treatment option is recommended for patients suffering from spasms and swelling. It stimulates better blood circulation and relieves chronic pain.

Myofascial Release Treatment – The goal of this therapeutic method is to release or loosen up damaged soft tissues. By gentle application of pressure to painful areas, it enables patients to release muscle stress and tension.
